🌴 Betel Nut Plant (Assam variety)
The betel nut plant, scientifically known as Areca catechu, is a tall, graceful palm widely cultivated across tropical Asia, especially in regions like Assam, India. Commonly referred to as “supari” or “tamul”, the plant produces areca nuts, which are traditionally chewed with betel leaves and hold deep cultural, social, and economic importance.
This elegant palm can grow up to 20 meters tall, featuring a slender trunk and a crown of feather-like fronds. It thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained, fertile soil. The nuts are harvested and processed into either red or white varieties, depending on regional practices.
Beyond its use in rituals and hospitality, the betel nut has also been studied for its medicinal and stimulant properties—though its overuse is associated with health concerns. In places like Assam, the betel nut remains a symbol of tradition, respect, and community.
